Where an ESA letter helps

Renting a home

When your disability or need isn't obvious, a landlord may ask for reliable information. A therapist's ESA letter is the usual way to give it, without sharing your diagnosis.

Student housing has its own accommodation process. Our college housing letter is $129 and is written for your school's disability services office.

Flights? Pet rules apply

Since 2021, airlines don't have to accept emotional support animals and may treat them as pets. We'd rather tell you that before you pay for anything.

What you receive

What your ESA letter includes

A legitimate letter is short and specific. Ours includes everything a housing provider needs to verify it, and nothing about your health they aren’t entitled to.

  1. Therapist detailsName, license type, license number and issuing state, so a housing provider can verify it.
  2. Date and contactThe date of the letter and how to reach the therapist's office.
  1. Disability-related needA statement that you have a mental health disability and that your animal helps with it, without your diagnosis in detail.
  2. SignatureSigned by the licensed therapist who evaluated you, as a PDF you can send right away (California: after the 30-day follow-up).

Could an ESA letter fit you?

Tap yes or no for each line. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

  1. A mental or emotional health condition makes parts of my daily life harder.

Sleep, work, focus, leaving home, being around people. A formal diagnosis beforehand isn't required.

  2. Having my animal around eases those symptoms.

Comfort by simply being there is what an ESA does. No training is needed.

  3. I rent, or I'm moving into an apartment, condo or college housing with pet limits.

Fair housing rules let you ask a landlord or school to waive no-pet policies and pet fees.

  4. I'm asking for my animal at home, not in stores, at work or in the airplane cabin.

An ESA letter covers housing. Public access and flights follow different rules.

This is a guide, not an evaluation. Only a licensed therapist can decide whether an ESA letter is right for you, and they’ll tell you honestly if it isn’t.

“No registries, no ID cards, no ‘certified’ vests. Just an honest evaluation and, when it’s appropriate, an ESA letter a landlord can verify.”

Frequently asked questions

What does an ESA letter cost here?

It's $129 for a letter listing one or two animals and $199 for three or more. You're charged only when the therapist issues a letter.

When will my ESA letter arrive?

Most people who qualify receive the signed PDF on the same day as their call. In California, you get a letter of intent first, then the ESA letter roughly 30 days later.

Is my landlord required to approve my ESA?

Not automatically. Federal guidance now has housing providers weigh untrained emotional support animals one request at a time, and state rules differ, so no letter can guarantee a yes.

Can my ESA come with me to shops or restaurants?

No. An ESA isn't a service animal in the eyes of the ADA, so businesses don't have to admit it.

Will my ESA fly without a fee?

Not necessarily. Since January 11, 2021, airlines have been free to decline ESAs or treat them as pets, with their regular pet rules and charges.

Is there an ESA registration I'm supposed to complete?

No. The government keeps no list of ESAs, and certificates, ID cards or vests sold online carry no legal weight.

What happens if the therapist doesn't issue a letter?

You pay nothing. Booking is free, and we charge only when a letter is issued.

More about ESA Letter Therapist

ESA letters from licensed therapists

ESA Letter Therapist is a telehealth service in the United States for people managing a mental health condition who get genuine relief from their animal's company. You won't just fill in a questionnaire. A licensed therapist talks with you and makes the call on whether an ESA letter is right.

Our evaluations are conducted by Gabriel Warner, LCSW, who is licensed as a clinical social worker. Andrew Patel, M.D., reviews them and signs a letter when what the therapist found supports one. If a letter turns out not to suit your circumstances, there's no charge.

On every letter you'll find the therapist's name, the type and number of their license, the state that issued it, and the date. That way your housing provider knows exactly who wrote it.

How the ESA letter process works

It doesn't take long, but it's a genuine conversation with a therapist rather than a checkbox. These are the steps.

  • Reserve a time online at no cost and tell us which state you live in.
  • Talk with a licensed therapist by phone or video for roughly 5 to 10 minutes.
  • If an ESA suits your situation, you'll get the signed letter as a PDF, most often that day.
  • Pass the letter on to your housing provider together with your request for an accommodation.

ESA letter cost and no recurring fees

You pay $129 for one letter that can list one or two animals. With three or more animals the price is $199. We also offer a version for college housing, such as dorms and student residences, at the same $129.

Reserving your evaluation costs nothing, and the charge applies only if the therapist decides to issue a letter. You won't sign up for a membership, and nothing bills you again later.

What an ESA letter does and doesn't do

The letter supports you when you ask for a reasonable accommodation at home, something the Fair Housing Act gives you the right to do. It describes why your disability makes the animal necessary, giving a landlord, property manager or campus housing office grounds to set aside a no-pets policy for you.

It won't open doors in public. The ADA does not count an emotional support animal as a service animal, so shops, restaurants and workplaces don't have to let it in. And since January 11, 2021, airlines haven't had to accept ESAs either, and many now handle them as pets.

No government agency keeps a list of ESAs, and there's no official ID card or vest. Sellers of those items are offering something with no legal force. What counts is a letter from a therapist who actually spoke with you.

Housing guidance changed in 2025 and 2026

The federal picture for animals in housing has moved. On September 17, 2025, HUD's withdrawal of FHEO-2020-01, the assistance animal notice it published in 2020, took effect. Then in guidance HUD released in May 2026, the agency said it would presume requests reasonable when the animal has learned disability-related tasks, but would weigh each untrained emotional support animal request on its own.

The Fair Housing Act's accommodation rule is still in force, as are state laws, and some states give ESAs stronger protection. No letter can make a landlord agree, but it supplies dependable information of the sort a provider is permitted to ask for. See your state guide for the rules where you live.

Who an ESA evaluation is meant for

We evaluate people whose mental or emotional condition seriously gets in the way of everyday life, for instance sleeping, focusing, working or looking after themselves, and whose animal helps take the edge off. Anxiety, depression, PTSD and panic disorder are among the most common.

Has your dog learned particular tasks that respond to your condition? Then a psychiatric service dog letter might fit you better than an ESA letter, and we're happy to discuss it on your call.

Please don't wait if things feel unbearable or thoughts of hurting yourself come up. Dial or text 988, or dial 911 in an emergency. An ESA letter can't stand in for urgent help or continuing treatment.

Giving your ESA letter to a landlord

Along with the letter, include a brief written note asking your housing provider to set aside its pet policy for your emotional support animal. Hold on to copies of everything that goes back and forth, and jot down when each item was sent or received.

Your landlord can reasonably follow up, but in general shouldn't probe into what your disability is or how serious it is. Your animal's conduct is still your responsibility, and like any renter you can be billed for real damage it does.

California ESA letters need 30 days

Under California's AB 468 (Health and Safety Code 122318), a practitioner must have had a client relationship with you for at least 30 days, and must complete a clinical evaluation, before writing documentation for an emotional support dog. For California residents, we send a letter of intent the same day and issue the ESA letter following a check-in close to day 30.
